Ocean Conservation

In line with the global 30 by 30 goals, we conduct domestic and international policy research and recommend national and international policies to conserve the marine environment.
Our main research area is expanding Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) of domestic and high seas including the Antarctic Ocean. We research effective management strategies and their implementation, and monitoring/evaluation of MPAs to achieve long-term conservation goals.

International Fisheries

We study and propose domestic and international policies to improve transparency in fisheries and traceability of fishery products for marine protection.
We monitor the negotiation process for the enactment/revision of conservation measures in RFMOs (Regional Fisheries Management Organizations) and Korea’s positions in major agendas. We participate in activities to end environmentally destructive fishing methods.

Renewable Energy and Biodiversity

We conduct research to minimize the environmental impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems during the energy transition process, including offshore wind power.
Based on the findings, we develop and propose policies to the Korean government and the National Assembly. We also research ways to enhance the public value of renewable energy and formulate policies to improve its environmental and social acceptability.

Resource Justice

The transition to electrification, with a focus on secondary batteries, is gaining attention in the transportation and energy sectors as a means to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
In this process, the demand for minerals such as nickel, lithium, and cobalt has surged. However, this growing demand has led to serious environmental and social problems in resource-extracting countries, including large-scale deforestation, biodiversity loss, increased coal use, and violations of indigenous rights. To address these challenges, we conduct research and make policy recommendations to reduce emissions in the mineral supply chain, prevent indiscriminate mining in Key Biodiversity Areas, and protect the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

Resources Circulation

We analyze domestic and international trends with the goal of reducing plastic production and engage in policy advocacy based on our findings.
Additionally, as part of international efforts to address plastic pollution, we conduct policy research related to the UN Plastics Treaty and closely monitor the Korean government’s stance and response strategies on key issues.
